Ragdoll Kittens for Sale Wollongong: Ragdoll Breeders Near the Illawarra

Looking for Ragdoll kittens for sale in Wollongong or the Illawarra? Regal Ragdoll Kittens is just up the hill from you. I'm Shannon, and we breed Ragdolls in our family home in Bowral, which sits at the top of the range from the Illawarra, roughly an hour's drive from Wollongong. It is close enough for you to meet the mother cat before you commit to anything.

Kittens leave us at twelve to thirteen weeks: desexed, microchipped, transferred to you on the NSW Pet Registry, and vaccinated twice with F3. They come with a vet health certificate, pedigree papers on limited registration, six weeks of pet insurance, a bag of their usual food and a blanket that smells of home. Both parents are DNA-tested negative for HCM (RD) and PKD.

Up the escarpment: collecting Ragdoll kittens from the Illawarra

Illawarra families collect from our home in Bowral, by appointment. There are two realistic ways up the escarpment, and which one you take matters more with a twelve-week-old kitten in the car than it does on a normal drive.

Picton Road, for Wollongong, Corrimal and the northern suburbs

From the city centre, head up Mount Ousley Road, turn onto Picton Road and follow it west to the Hume Motorway, then run south to the Mittagong or Bowral exit. Call it about an hour. Picton Road is a busy truck route, so leave a good gap, but it is wide and the curves are gentle. From Thirroul or Bulli, join it via the Princes Motorway.

Macquarie Pass, for Shellharbour, Albion Park and Kiama

The Illawarra Highway climbs from Albion Park up Macquarie Pass to Robertson, then on through Burrawang and into Bowral. On paper it is the shorter run from the southern suburbs. In practice it is a narrow rainforest road with hairpins and sheer drops, and it can be slow behind a caravan.

Here is my honest view. Drive up via Macquarie Pass if you enjoy it, but take Picton Road home. A kitten sliding about in a carrier through thirty tight bends is a kitten that arrives carsick and frightened. The extra fifteen minutes is worth it.

Put the carrier on the back seat with a seatbelt through the handle, keep the windows up and the air conditioning gentle, and let the kitten be. Our step-by-step guide to buying a Ragdoll kitten lists what to have ready before you leave the house.

A Ragdoll cat by the coast: humidity and ticks

Coastal humidity and that semi-long coat

The Illawarra summer is less about scorching heat and more about sticky, still afternoons when the nor'easter drops out. Ragdoll fur handles dry heat better than humidity. In a damp spell the coat around the armpits and behind the ears tangles faster, so move from a weekly comb to two or three quick sessions a week through summer. A metal comb with wide and fine teeth does more good than any slicker brush.

Our Highlands winters are colder than yours, so a kitten arriving from Bowral will not find the coast chilly. If anything, the first few warm nights may see it sprawled flat on the bathroom tiles. That is normal.

Escarpment bush and paralysis ticks

If you live in the northern suburbs, from Helensburgh down through Thirroul and Austinmer, or on any street that backs onto the escarpment, assume paralysis ticks are close by. They thrive in moist coastal forest, and they are at their most dangerous from September to December. For a house on the bush edge, a cat run attached to a window or a meshed-in back verandah gives your Ragdoll fresh air without the gullies. If your cat ever wobbles on its back legs, changes its meow or struggles to breathe, treat it as an emergency.

Houses, units and keeping it indoors

Many of our Illawarra buyers are in freestanding houses with yards, which makes it tempting to let a cat wander. Ragdolls are poor candidates for that. They are trusting, slow to sense danger and not much of a fighter, and Wollongong has busy roads cutting between the escarpment and the sea. A Ragdoll raised indoors from twelve weeks never misses the street. Read up on temperament and size in our Ragdoll breed guide, and meet the parents behind each litter on our cats page.

Vets and after-hours care

Register with a local vet in your first week and book a check-up within a fortnight, bringing the vaccination record and health certificate we give you. Ask your vet which after-hours service they refer to, and write it on the fridge. Knowing where to go at 10pm on a Sunday is worth more than any amount of reading.

Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama cat rules

Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama councils all apply the NSW Companion Animals Act. Fees and local areas differ, so confirm the detail with your own council.

Microchip, registration and desexing

NSW requires cats to be microchipped before sale, or by 12 weeks of age. Lifetime registration is due by 12 weeks or immediately when ownership transfers, whichever comes first, and the NSW Pet Registry warns that an unpaid registration can attract a $330 penalty notice. We microchip your kitten and transfer it to you; you then pay the registration online. A cat that is not desexed by 4 months of age needs an annual permit, but ours are desexed before they leave, so you skip that cost entirely.

Wildlife protection areas and food areas

Wollongong City Council says owners can be fined if a cat enters a wildlife protection area or goes within 10 metres of a public place where food is prepared or eaten. Under the Act, councils can declare public land off-limits to cats to protect native animals, and they signpost it. With the escarpment, the lake foreshore and a long string of beach reserves, the Illawarra has a lot of land where a roaming cat is unwelcome.

Containment is on the local agenda

NSW does not yet have a law requiring owners to keep cats on their own property. The Companion Animals Amendment (Control of Cats) Bill 2025, which would create that duty, is still before NSW Parliament, and a notice of motion asking Wollongong City Council to support it went to council in February 2026. I would plan on an indoor or enclosed setup from day one, so a change in the law never means retraining an adult cat.

Are there Ragdoll breeders near Wollongong?

Yes. Our home cattery in Bowral is about an hour from Wollongong by road, which makes us one of the closest registered Ragdoll breeders to the Illawarra. You can visit the litter by appointment once the kittens are six weeks old, meet the mother, and come back to collect your kitten at twelve to thirteen weeks old.

How long is the drive from Wollongong to Bowral?

Plan on about an hour each way. From the northern suburbs and the city centre, Picton Road to the Hume Motorway is the easiest route. From Shellharbour, Albion Park or Kiama, the Illawarra Highway up Macquarie Pass is shorter in distance, but it is steep and winding, so I suggest Picton Road for the trip home with a kitten.

Are cats allowed to roam in Wollongong?

Yes, NSW law does not currently require cats to be kept indoors, but there are limits. Cats are banned from public places within 10 metres of where food is prepared or eaten, and from declared wildlife protection areas, and Wollongong City Council can fine owners for both. A statewide cat containment bill is before NSW Parliament, so check with council for current rules.

Do cats get paralysis ticks in the Illawarra?

They can. Paralysis ticks live in moist coastal bush along the east coast, and the escarpment and gullies above Wollongong suit them well. Risk peaks from September to December. An indoor cat is far safer. If yours goes outside, ask your vet about a cat-safe preventative and check the head and neck every evening.

Can you fly a Ragdoll kitten to Wollongong?

No. Our flights only go to capital-city airports for interstate families, and Wollongong is a short drive from us, so Illawarra families collect their kitten from our home in Bowral by appointment. There is no transport charge from us when you collect. The kitten delivery page explains how interstate flights work.
