Ragdoll colours
A blue point Ragdoll is a greyish-white cat with soft slate grey-blue points on its ears, mask, legs and tail. It has blue eyes, a slate grey nose and slate grey paw pads, and no white markings. Blue colourpoint is the official name. When people talk about a grey Ragdoll, this is nearly always the cat they mean.
I'm Shannon from Regal Ragdoll Kittens in Bowral, NSW. Isla, our blue mitted queen, and Atticus, our king, who carries blue, give us blue kittens in most litters. This page covers what a blue Ragdoll looks like, how blue differs from lilac, and the blue kittens we have now.
These are the blue kittens in our house right now, in every pattern. Each one is $1,500 and goes home at twelve to thirteen weeks, desexed, microchipped and vaccinated, from DNA-tested parents. Blues are often reserved early, so if you want one specifically, join the waitlist and say so. Kittens of every colour are on our Ragdoll kittens for sale page.

Extra fluffy and happy to be carried around the house.

Sweet natured and devoted to her brother Ned.
These kittens are not blue, but they are the closest colours we have this season: lilac is the other grey Ragdoll.

Long-legged, chatty and the first to the door.
The points on an adult blue point are a cool, even slate grey with a faint blue tone, darkest on the ears and tail. The body is a cool white with a grey tint along the back, which keeps the overall look softer than a seal. Kittens start out nearly white and show pale grey ear edges in the first couple of weeks, and the colour deepens gradually until about two or three years old.
The quickest way to confirm a blue is the nose leather and paw pads. On a blue they are slate grey. A seal has dark brown, a chocolate pinkish brown and a lilac a lavender pink. If a kitten's points look grey but the nose is brown, you are looking at a young seal, not a blue.
Blue is one of four traditional Ragdoll colours, alongside seal, chocolate and lilac. You can compare all of them on our Ragdoll colours and patterns page.
There are two grey Ragdoll colours, and they are easy to confuse in kitten photos. Blue is the darker, cooler grey. Lilac is the dilute form of chocolate: a much paler grey with a pinkish, almost silvery tint.
| Blue Ragdoll | Lilac Ragdoll | |
|---|---|---|
| Points | Slate grey with a blue tone | Pale pinkish grey |
| Body | Cool white with grey shading | Milky white, stays very pale |
| Nose leather and paw pads | Slate grey | Lavender pink |
| How common in Australia | Fairly common | Uncommon |
| Genetics | Both parents carry dilute | Both parents carry dilute and chocolate |
Blue comes in all three Ragdoll patterns, and the pattern only changes where the white goes.
No white at all: slate grey points on a cool white body. This is the cat people usually mean by "blue point Ragdoll". It has the most even, uninterrupted grey of the three patterns.
A blue colourpoint with white mittens on the front paws, white boots on the back legs and a white chin and chest, sometimes with a white blaze down the nose. Isla, our most talkative queen, is a blue mitted, and you can meet her on our queens and king page.
A white inverted V on the face, a white chest and belly and four white legs, with grey-blue ears, outer mask and tail. The nose sits in the white V, so a blue bicolour has a pink nose. Young blue bicolours can look almost entirely white, because the pale grey points take longer to show against so much white.
Blue is a diluted seal. The dilute gene is recessive, so a kitten is only blue when it inherits a copy from both parents. A blue cat always carries two copies; a seal cat can carry one copy without showing it. That is why two seal parents can surprise you with a blue kitten, while two blue parents can never have a seal one.
In our cats, Isla is blue, Atticus is a seal who carries blue, and Clementine is a seal who carries blue as well. So most of our litters have a good chance of at least one blue kitten, and Poppy's litters can produce blue or lilac.
Choose blue for the look, not for a different cat. A blue point is exactly as relaxed, large and people-focused as a seal from the same litter. The one practical point is hair: grey-blue hair shows less on light grey or cream furniture and more on black clothes, which matters more than you might think with a semi-longhaired cat that sheds twice a year.
If you love the classic dark mask instead, read about the seal point Ragdoll. Temperament, size and grooming are covered in our Ragdoll cat breed guide.
No, but it is less common than seal. Blue is the dilute form of seal and is recessive, so both parents have to carry it. Blue kittens turn up regularly in lines that carry the gene, including ours, but they are usually the first kittens in a litter to be reserved, so they can be harder to get.
Only the colour of the points. A seal point has dark brown points and a cream to fawn body. A blue point has slate grey-blue points and a cooler, greyish-white body, with a slate grey nose and paw pads. The pattern, size and temperament are the same, and so is the price from us.
Almost always. Cat breeders call grey blue, so a grey Ragdoll is a blue point, blue mitted or blue bicolour. The only other grey-looking Ragdoll is a lilac, which is much paler and has a pinkish tint to the grey. A solid grey cat with no points is not a pedigree Ragdoll.
Yes. Every pedigree Ragdoll has blue eyes, whatever its colour. On a blue point the eyes can look slightly lighter than on a seal, because the grey mask gives less contrast. Green, gold or aqua eyes mean the cat is outside the Ragdoll breed standard.
From Regal Ragdoll Kittens, $1,500, the same as every other colour and pattern. That includes desexing, microchipping, two F3 vaccinations, a vet check and ACF pedigree papers. Blue kittens currently in our house are listed on this page and on our Ragdoll kittens for sale page.
