Buying a kitten

How to buy a Ragdoll kitten from us, step by step

Buying a Ragdoll kitten from us takes four steps: an inquiry, a chat, a reservation from six weeks old, and collection at twelve to thirteen weeks. There is no payment until you have chosen your kitten.

I would much rather spend time on the phone with you before you reserve than have a kitten go to a home that turns out to be wrong for them. None of this is a test. It is how I make sure the right kitten goes to the right family.

  1. Send an inquiry

Tell me about your home, who lives there and what you are hoping for. I reply personally, usually within two days.

  2. Have a chat

A phone or video call to answer your questions, talk about timing and suggest kittens who might suit you.

  3. Reserve from six weeks

Choose your kitten in waitlist order. A deposit holds them and comes off the price.

  4. Bring them home

Collect from Bowral at twelve to thirteen weeks, or I book a flight to your capital city.

Step 1: send an inquiry

Our inquiry form takes about three minutes. Only your name, email, phone and state are required. The other questions, about your home, other pets, children and how long the house is empty, help me suggest the right kitten. If you would rather talk, call me on 0420 163 548.

Step 2: a phone or video call

We talk about what you are looking for, what Ragdolls are like day to day, and when the next kittens will be ready. I will be honest if I think a Ragdoll is not the right fit, for example if the house is empty for long hours and you only want one kitten. This is also your chance to check me out: ask to see the queens on video, ask for the parents' HCM and PKD certificates, and check our NSW Breeder ID, B0273618228, on the NSW Pet Registry.

Step 3: the waitlist and choosing your kitten

After the call, you join the waitlist. It is free and you can leave it at any time. When a litter reaches six weeks old, I send photos and videos of every kitten to families in waitlist order, with my notes on each personality. You choose your kitten, or pass and wait for the next litter without losing your place.

To reserve, you pay a deposit, which comes off the final price. From then on you get weekly photos and short videos until collection day. Interstate families can also book a video call to watch their kitten play. The balance is due before go-home, and the details are in our kitten sale terms.

Step 4: collection day

Kittens go home at twelve to thirteen weeks, once they are desexed and healed, have had two F3 vaccinations and have passed their vet check. If you are collecting from Bowral, allow about an hour. We go through the folder together: vet book, desexing and microchip records, pedigree papers, parents' DNA results, insurance details and a feeding guide. Bring a secure carrier lined with a towel.

If your kitten is flying, I drop them at the pet transport company's depot on the morning of the flight, and you collect from the freight terminal at your capital-city airport. Costs and timings for each city are on the Ragdoll kitten delivery page.

Getting your home ready

  • One quiet room to start with, such as a spare bedroom or study, with the litter tray at one end and food and water at the other.
  • A large open litter tray. Ragdolls grow big, and a tray they will still fit at four years saves buying twice.
  • A tall, heavy scratching post. Ragdolls stretch full length to scratch and will ignore a wobbly one.
  • Cords, blind strings and hair ties out of reach, and toilet lids down.
  • An appointment booked with your vet for the 16-week F3 booster.

The first week at home

Keep your kitten in their starter room for the first two or three days, then open up the rest of the house a room at a time. Keep them on the food they came with for at least two weeks before changing anything, and mix any new food in gradually, as explained in what to feed a Ragdoll kitten. Introduce other pets slowly, through a door or a baby gate first. Most of our kittens are curled up on someone within a day, but a few take a week, and both are normal. I am a phone call away the whole time, and for the rest of your cat's life.

Questions about buying a Ragdoll kitten

How long is the waitlist for a Ragdoll kitten?

It depends on what you are after. Families flexible on colour and sex are often matched with a kitten from the next litter, within three to six months. If you want something specific, such as a lilac bicolour girl, it can take a year, because a particular combination may not turn up in every litter. I tell you honestly where you sit.

Do I need to pay to join the waitlist?

No. Joining the waitlist is free, and you are never obliged to take a kitten. You only pay a deposit once you have chosen a specific kitten and they are at least six weeks old. That deposit comes off the final price.

Can I choose my own kitten?

Yes. Families choose in waitlist order once a litter is six weeks old, which is when personalities start to show. I will also tell you which kittens I think would suit your home, based on what you told me about your household. You are welcome to disagree with me.

What should I buy before my Ragdoll kitten comes home?

A sturdy carrier, a large open litter tray with the same litter we use, a tall scratching post, food and water bowls, a wide-toothed comb and a few wand toys. Set up one quiet room first. Your kitten goes home with a bag of their usual food and a blanket that smells of home.
