Ragdoll kittens Newcastle and the Hunter

Ragdoll Kittens for Sale Newcastle NSW: Ragdoll Kittens in the Hunter

Looking for Ragdoll kittens for sale in Newcastle or the Hunter? I'm Shannon from Regal Ragdoll Kittens, and my family raises Ragdoll kittens in our Bowral home, around three hours down the motorway from Newcastle. It is a full day out, I won't pretend otherwise. But I would always rather you drove to a breeder whose home you can stand in than paid for a kitten from an advert with no address.

Each kitten leaves at twelve to thirteen weeks, desexed, microchipped and transferred to your name on the NSW Pet Registry. They have had two F3 vaccinations and a vet check, and they travel with pedigree papers, six weeks of pet insurance, food they know and a blanket from our lounge room. Their parents are DNA-tested negative for HCM (RD) and PKD.

Ragdoll kittens Newcastle: available now

Here is who is available, reserved or still to come. Because of the distance, most Hunter buyers reserve from photos and our notes rather than visiting at six weeks, then make one trip for collection. That works fine: reserved families get photos and short videos every week until collection day. Every kitten and its price is on our Ragdoll kittens for sale page.

Coast or valley: a Ragdoll cat in the Hunter

Coast versus valley

A Ragdoll in Merewether or the East End gets a sea breeze most summer afternoons. One in Maitland, Kurri Kurri or Cessnock does not, and the inland Hunter can be properly hot when westerlies come off the Upper Hunter. If you are inland, plan for an air-conditioned room your cat can always reach, and avoid leaving it shut in a sunroom or a sleepout with a tin roof. A heavy-coated cat panting with its mouth open is overheating. Cool it with damp towels and ring a vet.

Bushland, ticks and wildlife

The Hunter coast has big stretches of bushland right against the suburbs, from Glenrock and the Awabakal reserves to the bush around Lake Macquarie and the Watagans. Paralysis ticks live in moist coastal forest along the east coast and are most dangerous from September to December, so any cat with outdoor access in those suburbs is exposed. I'd keep a Newcastle Ragdoll indoors with a meshed patio or a window cat run. It protects the cat from ticks and traffic, and it keeps the local birds and ringtail possums safe too.

Settling in after a long drive

Three hours in a carrier is a big day for a kitten. When you get home, set it up in one small room, such as a bathroom or study, with its litter tray, water, the food we send and the blanket from our house. Leave the door shut for the first night or two and let it explore the rest of the house over the next week. Ragdolls are confident once they have their bearings, so a slow start pays off.

Vets and after-hours cover

Book your new vet for a check within two weeks and bring the paperwork we hand over. Ask which emergency service they use after hours, because in the Hunter that answer depends a lot on living near the city or out in the valley. Our Ragdoll cat breed overview covers grooming and diet, and you can see the cats behind each litter on our queens and king page.

A day trip from the Hunter Valley to collect your kitten

Hunter families collect from our home in Bowral. We do not fly kittens to Newcastle Airport: our pet transporter only lands at capital-city airports, and the nearest of those, Sydney, is closer to Bowral than to Newcastle. You would be driving to Mascot anyway. So the motorway it is.

The route is about 280 kilometres. Head south on the M1 Pacific Motorway past the Central Coast and over the Hawkesbury, take NorthConnex under Pennant Hills Road, then the M7 Westlink around western Sydney to the Hume Motorway at Prestons. Bowral is about forty-five minutes south from there. NorthConnex and the M7 both charge tolls, so make sure your tag account is topped up.

Same day or overnight?

You can do it in a day: three hours down, an hour or so with us, three hours back. Plenty of people do. My preference, though, is that Newcastle families drive down the afternoon before, stay a night in the Highlands and collect at nine the next morning. You arrive at our door rested rather than six hours into a driving day, you have time to ask questions without watching the clock, and your kitten does the trip home in daylight with a driver who is still fresh.

From Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens

Add roughly half an hour each way from Maitland or the vineyards, and a little more from Nelson Bay. For Lake Macquarie suburbs on the western side of the lake, joining the M1 near Morisset trims a few minutes.

On a three-hour run, a few things help. Line the carrier with an absorbent pad under our blanket in case of an accident, keep the carrier belted in on the back seat, and never open it at a servo stop: a frightened kitten can be under a car seat before you blink. Our page on how to buy a Ragdoll kitten from us has the full collection-day checklist.

Newcastle and Hunter cat rules

City of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Port Stephens councils all enforce the NSW Companion Animals Act. Confirm local details and current fees with your council.

What has to happen by 12 weeks

Under NSW law, a cat must carry a microchip before it is sold or given away, or by 12 weeks of age. It also has to be registered for life by 12 weeks, or straight away when it changes hands if that happens first. Our kittens are chipped and transferred to you before they leave, so on the drive home your one task is paying the lifetime registration through the NSW Pet Registry. The Registry can issue a $330 penalty notice when a pet is not registered, and adds a late fee after 28 days.

Desexing

NSW charges an annual permit for any cat not desexed by 4 months of age. Our kittens are desexed before they come home, so it does not apply.

Roaming, prohibited places and nuisance cats

NSW currently has no law requiring cats to be kept on their owner's property, although a cat containment bill has been before NSW Parliament since 2025. Cats must stay out of public places within 10 metres of food preparation or eating areas, and out of wildlife protection areas a council has declared. A council can also issue a nuisance cat order if a cat keeps making noise that unreasonably disturbs the neighbours or repeatedly damages things off its own property.

Renting with a cat

Newcastle has a lot of renters, and the rules changed in your favour in 2025. From 19 May 2025, NSW tenants ask for a pet using the official pet application form, and the landlord has 21 days to reply; silence counts as approval. A landlord can refuse only on listed grounds, such as unsuitable premises or more than four animals where that number is unreasonable. They cannot ask for extra bond or rent, though they can set reasonable conditions such as professional carpet cleaning at the end of the lease.

Where can I buy a Ragdoll kitten near Newcastle NSW?

We are a registered home cattery in Bowral, about three hours south of Newcastle by motorway, and many of our Hunter families collect from us. Every kitten goes home desexed, microchipped and vaccinated, from parents DNA-tested for HCM and PKD. Whoever you buy from, insist on a NSW Breeder ID in the ad and on seeing the mother cat.

How far is Bowral from Newcastle?

Bowral is roughly 280 kilometres from Newcastle, about three hours each way in normal traffic. The route runs down the M1 Pacific Motorway, through NorthConnex and along the M7 to the Hume Motorway. NorthConnex and the M7 are both tolled. From Maitland or Port Stephens, add another half hour or so to each leg.

Can a Ragdoll kitten travel three hours in a car?

Yes. A healthy twelve-week-old kitten handles a three-hour drive well if it stays in a secured carrier the whole way. Skip food for a couple of hours before you set off, keep the car cool and quiet, and do not open the carrier at a rest stop. Most kittens cry for the first twenty minutes and then sleep.

Can I keep a cat in a rental property in Newcastle?

Usually, yes, with the landlord's consent. Since 19 May 2025, NSW tenants apply using the official pet application form, and the landlord has 21 days to respond or the pet is approved without conditions. Landlords can refuse only on set grounds and cannot demand a higher bond or rent because you have a cat.

Can you fly a Ragdoll kitten to Newcastle Airport?

No. Our licensed pet transporter flies kittens only to capital-city airports for interstate families, and the closest one to Newcastle is Sydney, which is nearer to us than to you. So Hunter families collect from Bowral by appointment. How interstate flights work is explained on our Ragdoll kitten delivery page.

Ragdoll kittens for sale beyond the Hunter

Buyers who will pass through the city anyway might like our Sydney Ragdoll kittens page, and families further up the coast near the Queensland border should look at our Ragdoll kittens for Brisbane page, where flights come into play. Every area we cover is on our Ragdoll kittens near me list.

Ready to plan the drive?

Tell me where in the Hunter you live and what your household looks like. I will suggest a kitten and a collection time that works with the distance, and you will hear back from me, usually within two days.
