Ragdoll Cat Names: Boy and Girl Names for Ragdoll Kittens
The best Ragdoll cat names are short, easy to call across the house and still suit a big, floppy 7 kg cat ten years from now. Below are Ragdoll names grouped by colour, personality and style, plus a note on how your kitten's registered pedigree name works.
One tip before you choose: say the name out loud the way you would at dinner time. Cats pick out two-syllable names with a clear vowel sound most easily, so "Milo" and "Luna" tend to work better than "Bartholomew", however much it suits him.

How Ragdoll pedigree names work
Every pedigree kitten has two names. The call name is whatever you choose at home. The registered name is the one on the pedigree papers. It starts with the breeder's registered cattery prefix and is followed by a name the breeder picks, and it is fixed for life once the kitten is registered with the cat council.
The names you see on our Ragdoll kittens for sale page are call names we use while the kittens are with us. Keep the name if it has stuck, or change it. Kittens learn a new name in a week or two if you use it at every meal.
Tips for naming your Ragdoll kitten
- Wait a few days. Personality shows quickly, and a name that fits the cat beats one chosen in advance.
- Avoid names that sound like commands. "Kit" sounds a lot like "sit", and "Bo" like "no".
- Check it works for a big cat. "Tiny" is funny at twelve weeks and funnier at four years, but only if you like the joke.
- Agree as a household. A cat called three different names learns none of them.
- Use it at meal times. Say the name every time the food bowl goes down and your kitten will answer to it within a fortnight.

Ragdoll name questions
What is a good name for a Ragdoll cat?
A good Ragdoll name is short, easy to call and still suits a 7 kg cat. Two-syllable names ending in a vowel sound, like Milo, Luna or Banjo, are easiest for cats to pick out. Many owners take inspiration from the coat colour, such as Cocoa for a seal or Smokey for a blue.
Can I change my Ragdoll kitten's name?
Yes. Kittens learn a new name within a couple of weeks if you use it consistently, especially at meal times. The name we use while a kitten is with us is only a call name. Your kitten's registered pedigree name stays the same whatever you call it at home.
What is a Ragdoll's pedigree name?
A pedigree name is the registered name on your kitten's papers. It starts with the breeder's registered cattery prefix, followed by a name chosen by the breeder, and it never changes. Your kitten's everyday call name can be anything you like and does not need to match it.
