Buying a Ragdoll
How Much Is a Ragdoll Kitten? Ragdoll Cat Price in Australia
A pet Ragdoll kitten from a registered Australian breeder usually costs between about $1,500 and $4,500. The price depends on the breeder, the region and, most importantly, what is already done before the kitten leaves. Every Regal Ragdoll kitten is $1,500, whatever its colour, and goes home desexed, microchipped, vaccinated twice, vet checked and with pedigree papers.
The sticker price is only part of the cost. Below is what a Ragdoll kitten price should include, what you will spend in the first year and every year after, and the price red flags that catch out buyers every month.
Ragdoll kitten price: what you should get for it
Two kittens at the same price can be very different value. These are the things that should be included, and roughly what each would cost you to arrange yourself if they were not.
| Included in a Ragdoll kitten price | Why it matters | Rough cost if not included |
|---|---|---|
| Desexing | NSW charges an annual permit for cats not desexed by four months | $200 to $450 |
| Microchip and registration transfer | Required by law before sale in every state | $60 to $90 |
| Two F3 vaccinations | Protects against cat flu and enteritis | $180 to $260 |
| Vet health check | Catches heart murmurs, hernias and eye problems early | $80 to $120 |
| Pedigree papers | The only proof the kitten is a registered Ragdoll | Not available later |
| Parents DNA-tested for HCM and PKD | Rules out the two inherited diseases we can test for | Not available later |
Add the first four together and a kitten sold "entire, unvaccinated" for a few hundred dollars less is not actually cheaper. The last two cannot be added later at any price.
Why Ragdoll cat prices vary so much
Pet or breeding rights
Most kittens are sold as desexed pets on limited registration. A kitten sold to another registered cattery with breeding rights costs much more, because the buyer is paying for the bloodline as well as the cat.
Colour and pattern
Many breeders charge more for chocolate, lilac or show-quality markings. We do not: every Regal Ragdoll kitten costs the same, because they all get the same care and the same start. Our Ragdoll colours guide explains the differences if you are deciding.
Where you live
If your kitten has to fly, add the flight. Ours go with a licensed pet transporter to your nearest capital-city airport, usually $350 to $550 charged at cost. Families in Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and the Southern Highlands usually collect instead.
Ragdoll cost in the first year
Here is a realistic first-year budget on top of the kitten itself. Prices vary by city and brand, so treat these as ranges.
| Item | Approximate first-year cost |
|---|---|
| Setup: carrier, litter tray, scratching post, bowls, bed, toys | $300 to $600 |
| Kitten food, wet and dry | $700 to $1,200 |
| Litter | $150 to $300 |
| 16-week vaccination booster and a first vet visit | $150 to $250 |
| Flea and worm treatment | $100 to $200 |
| Pet insurance | $300 to $700 |
| Lifetime council registration | One-off fee, varies by state |
After the first year, most families spend roughly $1,000 to $2,000 a year on a healthy adult Ragdoll. Food is the biggest regular cost, and our guide on what to feed a Ragdoll kitten covers how to do that well without overspending.
Ragdoll price red flags
A low price on its own is not proof of a scam, but it is the most common bait in Australian pet scams. Walk away if a seller:
- will not do a live video call showing the kitten with its mother
- has no NSW Breeder ID, or no cat council membership in other states
- cannot show HCM and PKD DNA results for both parents
- offers kittens at eight weeks, or kittens that are not desexed
- asks for extra money after you have paid, for a crate, insurance, vaccines or a "pet transport fee"
- wants payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or a money transfer service
Our full checklist is on how to choose Ragdoll breeders, and our NSW Breeder ID, B0273618228, is on every listing.
What a Regal Ragdoll kitten costs
$1,500, every colour and every pattern, with the flight added at cost if you are interstate. That covers desexing, microchipping and transfer, two F3 vaccinations, a vet health check, pedigree papers on limited registration, six weeks of pet insurance, a bag of food and a blanket that smells of home. A deposit holds your kitten from six weeks old and comes off the price.

Ragdoll price questions
How much are Ragdoll cats in Australia?
A pet Ragdoll kitten from a registered Australian breeder usually costs somewhere between about $1,500 and $4,500, depending on the breeder, the region and what is included. Kittens sold with breeding rights cost considerably more. Every Regal Ragdoll kitten is $1,500, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated twice, vet checked and with pedigree papers.
Why are Ragdoll kittens so expensive?
Because doing it properly is expensive. A breeder pays for DNA tests on every parent, pedigree registration, two rounds of vaccinations, desexing, microchipping and vet checks for every kitten, plus twelve or more weeks of food and care. A kitten sold far below what those costs add up to usually skips some of them.
Is a cheap Ragdoll kitten a scam?
Not always, but a very low price is the most common sign of a pet scam in Australia. Be wary of any seller who will not video call with the kitten and its mother, has no Breeder ID or council registration, or asks for extra money for flights, crates or insurance after you have paid.
How much does a Ragdoll cost per year?
Plan on roughly $1,000 to $2,000 a year for a healthy adult Ragdoll in Australia. Food is the biggest regular cost, followed by pet insurance, an annual vet check and vaccination, litter, and flea and worm treatment. Dental cleans and unexpected vet visits come on top.
