Flame Point Ragdoll: Ginger and Orange Ragdoll Cats Explained
A flame point Ragdoll, also called a red point, is a Ragdoll with orange-red points on a creamy white body and blue eyes. It is the ginger Ragdoll most people picture. Flame points are genuine Ragdolls in lines that carry the red gene, and some overseas registries accept them, but they are rare in Australia, where most breeders, us included, work only with seal, blue, chocolate and lilac.
Here is what a flame point Ragdoll looks like, why most of them are boys, how they relate to cream and tortie points, and how to make sure a ginger "Ragdoll" is the real thing.
What a flame point Ragdoll looks like
The points are a warm orange to deep red on the ears, mask, legs and tail. The body is white to pale cream, often with faint orange shading on the back as the cat gets older. Like every Ragdoll, a flame point has blue eyes, and its nose leather and paw pads are pink. Flame point kittens are born white like all Ragdolls and can take a long time to colour up, so a young one often looks almost white with a peach tinge on the ears.
Red points nearly always show faint tabby-style barring, even on cats that are not lynx points. That is normal for the red gene and not a fault.
Flame, cream and tortie point Ragdolls
| Colour | Points | Usually |
|---|---|---|
| Flame (red) point | Orange to deep red | Male |
| Cream point | Pale peach, the dilute of red | Male |
| Tortie point | Patches of red or cream mixed with seal, blue, chocolate or lilac | Female |
The reason is genetic. The red gene sits on the X chromosome. A male has one X, so a single copy makes him red. A female needs the gene on both X chromosomes to be red; with one copy she becomes a tortie point. That is why flame point females are uncommon and tortie point males are rare.
Ginger and orange Ragdolls: real or not?
A ginger or orange Ragdoll with a pale body, orange points and blue eyes is a flame point. A solid ginger cat with no points, or one with green or gold eyes, is not a Ragdoll, whatever the advert says. The same rule applies to the black Ragdoll cats you will see advertised: the colourpoint pattern and blue eyes are what make a Ragdoll.
Finding a flame point Ragdoll in Australia
Because so few Australian lines carry red, a flame point Ragdoll kitten usually means a waitlist, an imported line or both. Before you pay a deposit:
- Ask which registry the kitten will be registered with, and whether that registry accepts red Ragdolls.
- Ask to see both parents' pedigree papers. At least one parent must carry red.
- Ask for HCM and PKD DNA results on both parents, just as you would for any Ragdoll.
- Insist on a live video call with the kitten and its mother.
The colours we breed instead
Regal Ragdoll Kittens breeds the four traditional colours in all three patterns. If you like a warmer colour, a chocolate Ragdoll has milk-chocolate points and the softest, warmest look of the traditional colours, and a lilac has pale pinkish-grey points. Both are covered in our Ragdoll colours guide, and this season's kittens are on our Ragdoll kittens for sale page.
Flame point Ragdoll questions
Is a flame point Ragdoll a real Ragdoll?
Yes, where it comes from registered Ragdoll lines. Flame point, or red point, Ragdolls carry the same colourpoint pattern and blue eyes as any other Ragdoll, with orange points instead of seal or blue. Some overseas registries accept them, but they are rare in Australia and outside the four traditional colours most Australian breeders work with.
Why are most flame point Ragdolls male?
The red colour gene sits on the X chromosome. A male has one X, so one copy of the gene makes him red. A female has two X chromosomes and needs the gene on both to be fully red. With only one copy she becomes a tortie point instead, mixing red with another colour.
Is a ginger Ragdoll the same as a flame point?
A ginger Ragdoll with a pale body, orange points and blue eyes is a flame point. A solid ginger cat with no points and green or gold eyes is not a Ragdoll, even with long fur. Check the eye colour and the body colour first.
Do you breed flame point Ragdolls?
No. Regal Ragdoll Kittens breeds the four traditional Ragdoll colours: seal, blue, chocolate and lilac. None of our cats carry red, so we cannot produce flame, cream or tortie points. If you want one, ask breeders for both parents' registration papers before you pay a deposit.
